Down-time is tricky for those in recovery. That old saw, “An idle mind is the devil’s workshop” is especially applicable to those in recovery. There is, however, a difference between “idle” and “resting.” During periods of down-time, it will soon become apparent that in which direction, your subconscious is moving. This is especially true early in recovery when previous behavior patterns will attempt to reassert themselves. As recovery progresses and you become accustomed to utilizing positive substitutions, this won’t be a problem – but early on, recognizing and redirecting those thoughts to healthy alternatives is very important.
