The thrill of the chase and the prospect of a euphoric high can blind a person to consequences of even a single episode of drug use: sickness, disability, loss of consciousness and hence control, estrangement from family and friends, divorce, incarceration, overdose, death – to name a few of the most serious. Euphoric anticipation is relatively short-lived, and those willing to wait this out and emerge onto a better planet will be both proud and grateful. In time, that back part of the brain where euphoric urges originate will bet the message and tone it down – a lot. This is a kind of urge-extinguishment that, over time, really works. In the beginning combining this with a call to a sponsor, friend or supportive family member may be necessary. Don’t rush it. You’ll get there!
