Frequently Asked

How will I know when I'm finally sober for good?
Sobriety is a process, not an event. Here’s the silver lining: done thoughtfully and thoroughly, achieving sobriety will illuminate and develop parts of yourself you did not know existed. It is literally a voyage of discovery and healing. On top of this, you’ll meet some wonderful, inspiring people along the way who will enlarge your world and your view of life’s possibilities – even in areas other than … achieving sobriety!
How long will it take to get sober and stay sober?

There is a difference between “clean” on the one hand, and “sober” on the other. Clean is a condition, and can be achievable days or weeks after last use; Sober is the next step, and involves lifestyle changes to extend clean time into a permanent condition.

Alcoholism and drug use runs in my family. We all do it. Why?

Addiction in America is a long-term problem and likely has significant connections to the kinds of personalities that settled the continent. These were risk-takers, a personality type that is more prone to addiction for a variety of different reasons, including expectations of success and rewards for risk and accomplishment.

How do I deal with doubt and shame? I have relapsed several times and my family thinks I'm a deadbeat.
A large majority of people in long-term recovery have the same history and have felt the same shame and embarrassment. Just get back on that horse! Family and friends may mock you in the short term, particularly in relapse scenarios, but this evolves into deep admiration with the passage of lengthy sober time.
