Most alcoholics and addicts derive from alcoholic and addicted families Frequently, the primary risk factor for those in recovery is their own families. This presents a conundrum, especially during family gatherings and celebrations when alcohol in particular flows freely. Those in recovery from drinking/using families have two choices: in dealing with weddings, birthdays and holidays when alcohol flow freely: avoid these altogether and rely on phone calls and cards – or bring a sober friend to the event with the job of keeping the glass out of your hand. This is do-able if, #1 your sober friend is someone you trust and respect, and #2 these events are few and far between.
