Most of us have no problem feeling compassion – so long as this emotion is directed to others, especially those in need. But when it comes to feeling compassion for ourselves- well, we just don’t do that. Self-compassion is simply not in the repertoire. “Oh stop whining” the voice inside our head shouts. “Stop feeling sorry for yourself!” But sometimes a period of mourning for the damage you’ve inflicted upon yourself is not only appropriate but essential. Those negative messages, created by ourselves, parents, siblings, friends, bosses, co-worker – these are always waiting to spring. But the person you are trying to save – YOU – has worth and value! This must be recognized and acknowledged even – especially – amid the cries for blood and vengeance coming from both your own soul a nd others. Mercy! Step back! Reappraise! You’re worth it!
